Your Questions, Answered
Getting Started
-
Usually, yes! It gives us a chance to look at the treatment area, talk about your goals, and make sure electrolysis is the right fit for you.
-
You'll notice progress throughout your treatments, but permanent hair removal is a marathon, not a sprint. Many people don’t see results until week 6.
-
We have a few options, booking online here on our website is the easiest, but if you have questions before you book you are welcome to call or email us at (651) 815 - 0772 | Hello@zaphousemn.com
Hair Growth
-
Hair grows in cycles, and not every hair is awake at the same time. We can only permanently treat hairs that are actively growing, so multiple treatments are needed to catch every follicle.
-
We know it's hard. But if the hair isn't there, we can't treat the follicle. Shaving is totally fine between appointments—tweezing and waxing are not.
-
Nope! That's one of the biggest hair removal myths. Shaving only cuts the hair at the surface—it doesn't change the follicle or make hair grow back thicker or darker.
Treatment Planning
-
Come with clean skin, stay well hydrated, and avoid tweezing or waxing before your appointment. If you plan to use numbing cream, be sure to follow the application instructions we provide.
-
When performed properly and followed with good aftercare, permanent scarring is very uncommon. It's important to follow your aftercare instructions and avoid picking or scratching the treated area while it heals.
-
Electrolysis doesn't cause ingrown hairs—in fact, it often helps eliminate them. Because the hair is permanently removed from the follicle, there is less opportunity for hairs to become trapped beneath the skin over time.
-
Most people experience mild redness for a few hours, with the skin feeling back to normal within 24 to 48 hours. Everyone heals a little differently, and areas with coarser hair may take slightly longer.
-
It usually isn't the same hair coming back. Hair grows in cycles, and we can only permanently treat hairs that are actively growing at the time of your appointment. As dormant follicles become active, new hairs appear, which is why multiple treatments are necessary.
-
Yes. Hormonal changes from conditions like PCOS, menopause, thyroid disorders, certain medications, or gender-affirming hormone therapy can activate previously dormant follicles. Electrolysis permanently treats existing follicles, but it can't prevent brand-new follicles from becoming active in the future.
-
We generally recommend about ⅛ to ¼ inch of hair growth—just enough for us to comfortably grasp each hair with tweezers. If you're unsure, feel free to ask before your appointment.
-
Yes! Electrolysis can safely be performed over healed tattoos because it targets the hair follicle beneath the skin rather than the tattoo pigment. We simply ask that your tattoo be fully healed before treatment begins.
-
Possibly. Certain electrolysis modalities may not be appropriate for clients with pacemakers or other implanted electrical devices. We'll review your medical history during your consultation and determine the safest treatment approach, and we may request clearance from your healthcare provider if needed.
-
Electrolysis has not been proven to be harmful during pregnancy. However, the research is limited so, we recommend discussing with your doctor before proceeding with treatment while pregnant.
-
Everyone experiences it a little differently. Most people describe it as tiny pinches or quick zaps (fitting, right?). We also have numbing options and plenty of tricks to help keep you comfortable.
-
Absolutely! We can recommend products and show you how to apply them for the best results.
-
Definitely. Bring headphones, watch Netflix, listen to a podcast, or just chat with us. Whatever makes the time pass faster.
-
At first, most clients come every 1–3 weeks. As your hair becomes finer and less frequent, appointments spread farther apart.
-
If you're a good candidate for laser, that's often a great combination. Laser reduces a large amount of hair, and electrolysis permanently finishes the lighter or remaining hairs.
-
Yes! Once a follicle is successfully treated, it loses its ability to produce another hair.
-
That's completely normal. Many of our clients were nervous before their first appointment. We'll walk you through everything, check in often, and go at a pace that feels comfortable.
-
Yes! That's one of the biggest advantages of electrolysis. It works on all skin tones and all hair colors, including blonde, gray, red, and white hairs.
-
Appointments range from 10 to 60 minutes, depending on the treatment area and your goals. If you're not sure how much time to book, don't worry—we're happy to help you choose the right appointment length.
-
Just a few seconds! Each hair is treated individually by inserting a very fine probe into the follicle and applying energy to destroy the cells responsible for hair growth. While each hair is quick to treat, there are thousands of follicles, which is why multiple appointments are needed.
